Summary: Cities now host half the world's population and provide 70 percent of its gross domestic product, making them engines of growth. Managing these economic centers well is essential for development. In nearly 3,000 municipalities worldwide, the Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) identified 190 operations as Municipal Development Projects (MDPs). These MDPs have been the World Bank's principal instrument to help strengthen municipal management over the past decade. Evidence from this experience can provide useful input to the design of future MDPs—(p. ix).
