Summary : “Afghanistan is a country where hazards such as floods, landslides and earthquakes hinder social and economic progress, apart from internal insecurity. At the same time, communities have developed indigenous coping strategies to effectively deal with many of these disasters. This research is an exploratory review, focusing mostly on traditional practices and community coping mechanisms that mitigate the effect of hazards such as floods, landslides and earthquakes. The terms of reference for this research outlined the following aspects of community coping mechanisms for study viz.: the capacity of communities to assess risk factors and vulnerabilities; levels of organizational capacity and coordination; women’s involvement, experience in quick response; levels of preparedness; search and rescue and first aid capacities; early warning systems; community contingency plans; emergency resources and infrastructure” (p. 1)
