Summary: This review considers the production of illegal drugs and the need to find economic alternatives. The review has been carried out realizing that international strategies are needed to combat the global mesh of illegal drug production operations involved in the chain from cultivation, manufacture, transportation and marketing to consumption by addicts. Any one aspect considered in isolation would give a false picture—(p. i).
